When it comes to starting a business or even growing your current business you want to be strong. You want to have strengths that set you apart in the market place and help define you in your niche. So how do you create those strengths that set your business up for success?
It Starts at the Top
Whether you're a solo-preneur or have a staff of a 1000 people everything starts with you as the CEO. Every strength begins with you and your knowledge, your skill set. The number one way to increase the strength of your business is to increase your skill sets.
Inevitably in business there is going to be a certain task or skill set that you are inherently weak at. This could be sales, it could be social media marketing it could be web design. The main thing is whatever area you are weak in you must go and find those skills. The great thing about today is all of these skills are accessible through the Internet. There is no shortage of online classrooms that you can go to and learn these assets.
You have sites like Udemy, Coursera, Linkedin learning and a host of other learning platform services that have every skill set you could possibly need for business. Some offer certifications some are just the knowledge, you pick which one resonates with you and what you need for your business structure.
Depending on the level of development in your business you might be thinking "I don't need to do all this I'll just hire somebody to cover my weaknesses." Later on in your business development that might be fine but at the beginning this is something to be careful of.
Imagine if you were hiring a social media marketer because you had very limited knowledge of how it's done. Now 2 weeks later after this person has been hired you're not seeing the results from your social media accounts that you thought you would. When you question this new hire they tell you "oh it takes time to gain traction and don't worry it'll pick up." Two months go by and still you see no pick up, no increase in your traffic from social.
The reason you are not seeing the pick up in traffic from your socials is because this person actually isn't as advanced as they said. But you didn't know that because your knowledge of social media marketing is basic at best. Had you taken a course you would have seen and known that this person is not performing as they should because you have a deeper level of knowledge in how social media marketing works. This is why at least a basic level knowledge is advisable before hiring your weaknesses.
You Don't Know what You Don't Know
This phrase is kind of a fun one but it's very true there is too much information out there to know everything. The 2nd best way you can acquire strengths to bolster your business is by working with a mentor or a coach. This is someone who has walked the path before you and has seen and experienced the mistakes. This is someone who can guide you and also challenge your decisions to help mold you into the entrepreneur that you see in your future.
Even if you've taken all the courses necessary and have mastered the skill sets in order to have a successful business you still cannot do it all by yourself. This lesson unfortunately some entrepreneurs have to learn the hard way. However if you have the humility to realize that you don't know what you don't know working with a mentor or coach will be one of the greatest things you can do for your business and for yourself.
The process of finding a mentor or coach to work with is deeply personal. Both you and the coach have to decide that it's a good fit, your personalities work well and that your paths are aligned. Once that process is done and both of you are on board the transformation is amazing! You'll discover things you didn't know about yourself, about your business, maybe even about life. Do not overlook the opportunity to learn from someone who has walked the path before you and can make you better than you ever imagined.
Increasing your skill sets and working with mentors increases your strength in business as well as your flexibility or ability to adapt to different situations. When you are strong and flexible and come up against those crap situations in business, you will be able to go through the turmoil and come out the other side still standing.
Here's to your strong future in business!
